How Does Radon Enter a Home?

Radon gas seeps into homes through cracks in foundations, gaps around pipes, sump pumps, and other openings in your home’s structure. It’s a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock beneath your property.

  • Radon is odorless, colorless, and tasteless—impossible to detect without testing
  • The EPA identifies radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US
  • Many Illinois homes have elevated radon levels due to local soil composition
  • Without testing, you simply won’t know if your family is at risk

Without professional testing, you simply won’t know if your family is being exposed to dangerous radon levels. Since radon is completely invisible and undetectable by human senses, the only way to identify elevated concentrations is through specialized equipment and proper radon testing protocols. Many Illinois homes sit above geological formations that produce higher radon levels, making testing especially important in our region.

How to Prepare Your Home for a Radon Test

Please read the following instructions to maintain the conditions required for a valid radon test.

  • All windows in the home on all levels must remain closed.
  • All exterior doors must be used for normal entry and exit. (60 Seconds or Less)
  • For occupied homes the HVAC System can be kept at a comfortable temperature, but the fan must remain on AUTO.
  • If the home is vacant or the occupants are out of town, the HVAC system must be between 67-77 °F and the fan must remain on the AUTO Function.
  • The whole house fan should be shut off if present and manually controlled.
  • Any fireplace may not be used and the Flue should be closed If it is functional and remains closed.
  • Range Hoods, clothes dryers, and bathroom exhaust fans can be used in moderation.
  • Ceiling Fans, Portable Dehumidifiers and Air cleaners are not to be used within 20 feet of the monitor.
  • Homes with a Mitigation System must be functioning.
  • Accessible windows and exterior doors on the lowest level may have been sealed with a tamper proof tape. They must remain intact for a valid radon test. If any tamper tapes are disturbed and the test has to be reset or tapes need to be replaced additional cost will be incurred.

If one or more of the conditions above were not met 12 hours prior to the technician setting up the test, the state requires that the testing period be extended from 48 to 72 hours.

Do all homes need radon testing?

All homes should be tested for radon, regardless of age, location, foundation type, or whether radon has been found nearby. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that comes from the ground, and levels can vary widely between neighboring homes. A house next door may show low readings while another has elevated levels. New construction is not exempt, and features like basements, crawl spaces, slab-on-grade foundations, and even renovations can influence radon entry. Because radon is colorless and odorless, testing is the only reliable way to understand what’s present inside a home. National health agencies recommend testing every home at least once to establish a baseline reading.

How often should a home be tested for radon?

Most homes should be tested for radon every two to five years, even if past results were low. Retesting is also recommended after renovations, changes to the home’s foundation, HVAC updates, or shifts in how lower levels of the home are used. Seasonal differences can influence readings as well, which is why consistent testing remains important. Homes that have mitigation systems installed should follow a regular testing schedule to confirm the system is continuing to function as intended. Since radon levels can change due to environmental conditions and structural factors, periodic testing helps homeowners stay informed rather than relying on outdated results.

Can HVAC systems impact residential radon levels?

HVAC systems can influence indoor radon levels by changing air pressure and airflow within a home. Systems that move large volumes of air, such as forced-air heating and cooling, bathroom fans, or whole-house ventilation, can affect how radon enters and circulates. In some cases, pressure differences may draw more radon in from the soil, while in others, increased air exchange can help reduce concentrations. The impact varies by home design and system setup, which is why testing is important both before and after major HVAC changes. Radon testing provides real data rather than assumptions about how a system may be affecting indoor air.

Does weather affect radon test results?

Weather conditions can influence radon test results, particularly during short-term testing. Factors such as temperature differences, barometric pressure, heavy rain, or snow cover can change how radon moves from the soil into a home. For example, colder weather often leads to closed windows and lower indoor pressure, which can increase radon entry. Because of this, professional testing follows specific protocols to account for weather-related variables, including closed-house conditions when required. Long-term tests help balance out short-term fluctuations by measuring levels across multiple seasons. Understanding how weather plays a role helps ensure results are interpreted accurately and responsibly.
